Here is some interesting history regarding the concept 
behind the YE/ZB system.

The "Heterodyne Principle" -- that is, using two signals to 
produce a third signal -- was first conceived in 1901-02 by 
Professor Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, a Canadian-born radio 
pioneer who, over the course of his career, held over 540 US 
patents spread over a wide range of engineering fields.

    I am glad you wrote about Fessenden. To me he is one of 
the most interesting people in early wireless history.  He 
was very far sighted and you may mention that he 
experimented with radio-telephone well before vacuum tubes 
and is credited with what was probably the first broadcast, 
speech and music (he played the violin) to ships at sea. It 
didn't work very well but it worked and that was remarkable. 
Like many inventors he was not a very good businessman and 
was also supposed to be a difficult personality.  I think it 
is too bad his name is not better known.
