For good reason.  You don't want to tell Mr. Jap how to get to wherever

And that is Ken's point.  The design was ingenious.
Simple, effective but NOT obvious.

There's a lot of history and technology tied up in this (almost
disappearing) gear.
The question is: (1) Why was is less appreciated than it deserved and
(after that)
(2) How do we preserve it (and the history that goes with it)?
