In fact, the R-24 also often had a similar adapter. I have had several
(hacked) versions here that contained one. Robert Downs certainly knows far
better than I which one was sometimes included with the BC band models.
In the Navy manual on the ARC-5 system, both the 190 - 550 kHz receivers
(R-23*/ARC-5) and the BC band (R-24) were included in the section on
Navigation Receivers. All the others were listed as Communications
Receivers.

An external loop. The R-23 also has those, as do many models of the
BC-453, especially the later models. I don't know the model number of the
loop which was commonly used with those receivers, though. But I'll bet
Robert does.

No. It is simply a switch to switch the input between the regular antenna
connector and the loop connections.
