 I don't know from experience about using matching transformers/baluns, but it seems likely that considering the wide range of antennas & lines & receivers, there must sometimes be value to matching receiver inputs to antenna lines. Some of the Handbooks talked about it for improving sensitivity and showed us various RX antenna matching devices for that reason. If it doesn't take an unacceptably large slice out of one's life, experiment with it a bit, you may find it useful (or not) and may even learn something about which the rest of us are uninformed.
