I just finished looking up this series of articles, downloading them, and 
reading through them. 

Kyle used the BC-453, completely repackaged and with miniature tubes, as 
his tunable 3rd IF. He used a fixed 2nd IF stage (actually a "broad-band" 
converter covering something like 7 - 8 MHz), and then band-converters 
ahead of that.  

What was interesting to me about this article is that he used 12AT7-based 
Pullen-mixers wherever he needed a mixer.  

His bibliography is quite extensive.
