I wasn't joking about the banana plugs.
Banana plugs (and perhaps mini-banana plugs) are available in solderable
versions.

1. cut out a circular piece of pc board the same diameter as the VT-52 base
2. drill 4 holes in it for the banana plugs at same positions and
spacing as the VT-52 pins
3. machine an isolating groove around each hole, leaving a ring of copper
to solder to
4. fit a banana plug up into each hole and solder to the ring
5. tack the wires from the 6AQ5 or 5763 socket on with solder

The whole assembly can now be pushed down into the old socket from above
with a
cardboard tube from a kitchen paper roll or similar. Choose a tube that
will fit over the
6AQ5/5763 and its socket and press on the pc board.

Question is, do the banana plugs or mini-banana plugs bind firmly in the
old socket?
