The SCR-274N began life as a "carbon copy" of the Navy
ATA/ARA set, which is always painted black (salt air and all).
The first production run by Aircraft Radio Corp and the early
Western Electric production where painted black because
the specifications were copied from the Navy set.   Later runs
by Western Electric and Colonial dispensed with the paint as
a cost-saving measure.
