Something called "ChromeGlow," sold for motorcycle rim cleaning, also works well.
As for the eraser method, I've used the typewriter erasers that must be sharpened in a pencil sharpener (remember those?) to get at the tight places.  When you find these, get plenty.  You may need them later, and I wouldn't be surprised if they will soon be extinct.  If not already.... I haven't looked for any in a while.  Maybe I better....

Yes. That would work well.

I use "Mothers Mag and Aluminum Wheel Polish" on mine.

Works well.
