Most evenings there is something going on down below 3.750. Quite often it
ends up getting started by someone calling CQ, though, so it's not a good
fit for the "I listened but didn't hear any AM activity" approach.
Spin the dial and give a listen. If that yields nothing, try throwing out a
CQ on 3.705, 10, 15, or below 3.700 if you're an Extra class.
I'd forgotten too that 3.725 is a popular watering hole for the guys north
of the border. VE3AJM and other AMers are there pretty regularly and have
been for a couple decades or more.
Another advantage to operating in the 80m portion is the ability to hear
lower power stations you'd never be able to pull out of the hairball up in
the 75m section. I worked a fellow in 3 Land some years back using his
Command set station, perfect copy. Even got a card from him.
