You're right, Mark. There's been regular activity in the 80m 'fone portion
since the expansion in 200....6? AM DX, too. I've worked France/F6AQK on AM
numerous times between 3.705 and 3.710, and there are plenty of stateside
stations who hang around down there. At least there are back east. Can't
speak for out Ken's way. If the person he was addressing is more toward the
left coast, he's probably right - chances of hearing or working anyone
using low power beyond a busy 75m frequency are probably slim.
The advantages to operating in the 80m portion include less of the garbage
heard in the 75m portion, and less congestion overall. Not that any of the
HF bands are terribly busy these days. I'm only an Advanced and can only go
down to 3.700 (3705 to stay in band, of course). But there are several
groups of AMers who hang out below 3700 in the Extra portion and can be
heard most nights. As well, there are a couple groups that hold weekend and
weeknight nets on 3.715 and 3.733.
I just wish I had time to get on. There are cobwebs growing from my
transmitters to the operating table!
