One quirky issue with open wire balanced transmission line in the high power world is arc-overs from contaminants.
Not much of problem in the ham radio world, but there are several miles of open wire balanced transmission line at the VOA Tinang transmitter site and between the ash fallout from the sugar cane burning season and spider webs, that station has numerous off-ons of transmitters due to arc-overs.
