A lathe would be nice for turning the ends.
Here's the zl1anm homebrew lathe:

Cut the brass rod to length
clamp it in the chuck of your drill
fix the drill securely in something like a vice
use coarse file at first, then finer and finer
finish up with fine emery paper for that smooth look
