Thread count, probably.  The vintage mic stands, and the majority of ham 
radio mics of that era, used Switchcraft 2501F connectors with a 5/8" 
-27 thread.  I think there's an older designation, but I can't recall it 
at the moment.

Quite right.  Which makes me wonder how well the threads did for a 
natural gas distribution system in the 1800s.  They must have used a lot 
of tar or pitch....
