Not a bad idea. It's need a transformer to step up the output, but that's
not hard. Trandformers are small at 800 Hz. I could probably make a pretty
good one by adding a hand-wound primary to a 400 Hz Variac.
It was common in the lab to use McIntosh amps as variable frequency supplies.
