Did the I-177 tube tester filter down to the USN as a replacement/supplement
for the Weston OD before the TV3 arrived in 49?

Subject: [ARC5] Planned Navy equipment display

The scarcity of some items has brought about a rethink on how to handle the
assorted Navy equipment in the displays. This includes the GF/RU, ARA/ATA
and AN/ARC-5 systems which were coexistent aboard a few carriers toward the
end of the war. After a period of ponderizing, I came up with the idea of
having it all in a mockup of an ART shop aboard a carrier. This would be
late enough that all three would be present and, for display purposes, the
ship would be old enough to have seen sufficient action to warrant some
shop-built replacements for bits lost or damaged and for which the real
replacements haven't yet filtered down the supply train. Since it is a shop
environment, things like racks and shock mounts can be ignored and a few
pieces like the GF/RU junction box can be shop-built substitutes.

The fixed equipment thus far will consist of one each Rx & Tx 5-meter test
set to handle the ARA/ATA and AN/ARC-5*, one each ATA & AN/ARC-5 modulator
with dynamotor, an RU-16 dynamotor, an LM, an OE-5 (acquisition pending), a
set of shop-built dummy antennas and anything else I either have, can
acquire or can create using what's on hand - i.e., shop-built pieces.

* I know that the test units for the ATA and AN/ARC-5 transmitters are
different however this goes back to the "make do" environment with adaptor
cables made up to handle the differences.

My MD-7/ARC-5 is missing its relays and one or two other components plus the
connectors are all wrong however I think I can still make it work using a
bit of Low Peasant Cunning. Alternatively if I can wiggle my ears and bay
at the moon just right I may be able to use the ATA modulator for power for
any AN/ARC-5 transmitters I may wind up with and ignore any modulation
differences by simply not modulating anything. In either case both systems
will be using the same test unit so I'll have to make adaptor cables to
match.

The GF/RU presents an interesting situation. One of the more difficult
pieces to find for that system is the junction box. Being slightly more
clever than the average lobotomized baboon, I came up with a simple solution
that being a shop-built one that is essentially a copy of the ones being
created for the SCR-A*-183. This again fits with the "make-do" conditions
plus cuts by half the number of connectors required to create a system. It
also allows the terminals to be exposed so that testing (if required) is
made somewhat easier. One other thing I'll have to make is a replacement
for the 22266 test meter but that shouldn't be a major problem. The
original looks like it's supposed to be bulkhead mounted so it can go with
the other test meters. Given the number of wooden packing crates used
during the war, I doubt finding wood to fabricate the replacement junction
box & meter housing would be difficult either on board or at a forward base.

Something I don't have is a tube tester to go with this. An OQ would
possibly be used in the shop with an OD for luggable use in the hangar bay
or flight deck however I doubt I'll find either one so for actual tube
testing I'll use my Jackson 536s and probably forego anything for the
display.

Question: My copy of NAVWEAPS 16-30ARC5-501 Handbook Bench Test and
Alignment Procedure AN/ARC-5, dated 1 October 1949, shows the test equipment
available at the time. With them are SCR-274-N and occasional ARA/ATA
components that correspond to those in the AN/ARC-5 system as used for the
aforementioned procedures. What I don't know is what the comparable test
equipment was in 1943-1944 nor do I know if that corresponding SCR-274-N
equipment list would have been available in the same time frame. Can anyone
shed some light on this?
