you're right. 1956. I was at grad school at Columbia.

My Fair Lady was on Broadway. They changed the line "that hairy hound 
from Budapest" to "that hairy hound from Bucharest."

We went out to Gravesend Bay on New Year's Day to welcome a shipload of 
Hungarian refugees. Many still in blood-stained clothes.

Being I was a newsman, with a 4x5 Speed Graphic camera, I took photos in 
the holds where the Hungarian patriots had come across the Atlantic.  
Using the natural light - bare bulbs hanging from the overhead. I 
thought it was pretty dramatic stuff. I offered the photos to one of the 
top photo syndicates in NY. They were rejected as not being of good 
enough quality
