How come on a boat the person steering sits on the right? (As far as I 
know, all over the world)

     But in Europe the navigation markers are green on the right when 
returning to harbor whereas in North America it's "red, right, returning"?

     What irks me are the different width of the blades in a standard 
electrical plug/receptacle. With some appliances like timers, night 
lights, etc. it's impossible to  plug everything in unless you grind the 
wide blade narrow enough to plug in either way
