Every mag switch I worked on was marked as to which mag went to which
terminal - 1 (or left) goes to 1 (or L), 2 (or right) goes to 2 (or R).
However, even us dumb as stumps mechanics know that a mag is disabled by
grounding through the switch and it's pretty easy to figure out which is
which with a VOM and most of us dumb as stumps mechanics had at least one of
them on hand.
