You've used the word "fascinating" but there's an implied suggestion
that up = on is the way the world should be, as defined by Americans, and
that anything else is quirky or quaint.
I don't want to start a flame war, but there's no particular justification
for either standard. Remember that posts to this list go out to a worldwide
audience where some members live in countries where the light and socket
switch standard is down for on, and where yes, we do drive on the left.
