Bill I think you are right. I once caught the guy at the local ace hardware restocking bins out of boxes having McMaster Carr part numbers. And in at least one case i could buy the item from Ace for a few cents less than the McMaster carr catalog price.

Here in Michigan all the hardware, box, and farm stores carry that stuff
along with angle, channel, box and sheet iron/steel, aluminum brass and
copper - threaded and plain rods. The box stores have the least
knowledgeable staff and the hardware stores are the best.
