That is a good question to which I do not know the answer. I might hazard a 
guess: I have yet to find a bad Loctal tube unless the pins have been 
corroded off.

Maybe at the time the Loctals simply had a proven track-record for reliability 
that the miniatures had not yet matched.

I dunno. Just a guess.

My very most favorite tubes are the subminiatures.
