You're absolutely correct: it has 239 KHz IFs. Therefore, the only thing it 
CAN be is a BC band job. 

Too bad the fellow didn't have the dial from a derelict BC-946 or R-24 
instead of that 6 - 9.1 MHz dial...

Yes. As I said, all it would take is removal of the center-mounted connector 
and replacement of the tuning cap with one from a derelict BC-453 or 
BC-946.

LOTS of those BC band ARC-5s were, at one time, literally chopped to 
ribbons to make "HiFi " AM "tuners". It makes me slightly ill to think of it.

Could be. For one thing it is that Type 12 model that was originally set up for 
"14 VDC INPUT" as the tag on the rear deck says.
