Remember our discussions on the ARC-5 tuning couplings?

Well, the PL-259 shell is exactly the same diameter and thread as that for a shielded aircraft spark plug lead.  Of course, the shielding on aircraft spark plug leads is designed to reduce ignition-generated RF interference for radio-equipped aircraft.

So I think I know where part of that connector design came from.
