Tim,

No doubt there will be several "beginnings" but the one I understand is 
that a machinist at the Naval Research Lab (NRL), or whatever it was 
called back then, was tasked with designing a prototype connector, and 
that's what he came up with....   I guess if I was a machinist, and was 
given that task, I'd probably come up with sort of the same thing?
