It was the same as if you connected 2 zeners back to back.  As the polarity changed one conducted forward and the other "zenered" and the reverse each way  The zener voltage was approximately 35 volts so it worked in the 28 volt plus or minus 4 volt system used for control logic.

I don't know if they are still available.  They looked like an axial diode but had a metal case larger then a diode.  They were contained in the relay logic modules that were mounted onto a Bendix 61 pin MS connector.  All the relay logic was mountrd on large patch panels based on 19 inch rack assemblies made by AMP.
