The BC-458 I got from you is an integral part of the setup.  In fact it was the inspiration!

The crystal wasn't 1.7 mc.  I was reading the serial number, by mistake, which was 1720.  Wishful thinking at work, I guess.  The actual crystal was 6200 kc.

I noticed the transmitter was set on 5490 kc, once I got home.  Seems like that was a frequency used by the Coast Guard, perhaps.

 got from me at RARSfest. The transmitter looked fine but the
 cover looked like it had been pulled through a keyhole
 backward. Did you ever find out the origin of the 1.7 mc
