There was a short article in ER Magazine a few months ago concerning "the 
first" installation of a radio in an automobile. One antenna suggested was a 
V-shaped wire running from near the front axle to the ends of the rear axle 
near the wheels under the car.

The one the original designer wanted was copper screening under the fabric 
on the roof. He settled for chick wire.

Supposedly one of the BIG problems with the first radios in cars was ignition 
noise....like putting radios in Navy airplanes...the Navy figured out quite early 
that there was no sense in transmitting if you couldn't hear.

NRL worked on reducing ignition noise and finally succeeded.
