Over the past 20 to 30 years the passband has gradually been narrowed
to compensate for the increasingly high noise level on the band due to
a combination of power line problems, adjacent channel QRM, and
unfiltered comsumer appliances.  The days of the 20 kc passband AM
broadcast rx are long gone.   Some of this is being addressed in
comments to the FCC in the recently closed comment period for the AM
Revitalization NPRM.
