[ARC5] Broadcast or beacon?

In the CQ "Command Sets" handbook, there is an article on how to move a BC-453 to the broadcast band.  This article also moves the IF coils up to 239 kc, the IF used in the BC-946 and R-24/ARC-5, by removing turns.

Nothing is said about the BFO, as the writer of the article was interested in converting a receiver to use as a cheapie BCB car radio.

It's rather intelligently done as I recall; he checked the coils against those from a broadcast-band version using some kind of test gear (Q-meter?) to get them right.

This book is on line somewhere, either BAMA or the Boatanchor Pix web site.

Had to call George today on another radio matter, so I asked him about the
receiver. He said it's exactly how it came to him, doesn't appear to have
any ham mods but he doesn't recall pulling the bottom plate either. Said he
checked it and it works, BFO too. Inspection stamp next to the tag (a
triangle with a 10 over a 71 inside) and another on one of the back side
corners. He thinks the drawer replacement is postwar as it's just a plate
and socket. I seem to remember reading that someone produced these as an
aftermarket item.

He also thought he recalled reading an article possibly by Gordon that said
something about some BC-453s being converted to the BCB before the BC-946
was produced, but asked me not to hold him to that as he couldn't recall
specifics of the article like title, date, etc.

George is indeed a great guy, as trustworthy as the day is long. As David
suggested, I'd encourage anyone interested in more info to contact him via
email and discuss it. He'll bend over backward to respond to
reasonable/sensible requests. He's not a dealer into hyping his stuff for
higher profits, but like many of us, is just trying to lighten the load.
And having been in his basement, I can assure you - it's quite a load!
