I know of two conversions of the Q5’er to BC. One was done in CQ and reprinted in “Surplus Conversion Handbook”. This one involved changing the IF along with the RF and Mixer coils. The second is in “Surplus Radio Conversion Manual” third edition edited by Bill Orr. This one left the IF at 85kc and it tunes .5 to 1.6 mc. The simplest conversion is to put BC coils into the Q5’er, handy if you have a spare Q5’er and stumble onto the BC set from someone who decided to follow one of those conversions that start “strip all components…..” I don’t recall such a conversion in QST, although that’s just my memory.
I remember one greedbay auction many years ago where someone was selling a receiver with a .19-.52 dial and the range painted onto the back was .5-1.5. I asked the guy to look at the IF cans and sure enough someone had changed a relatively rare set into the most common.
