Hi Dave,
I have looked at several possible (reversible) mods for the receivers
and decided the way to approach what I want to do is install some of
those newfangled transistor gizmos "under the hood". Rather than mute
the receiver I prefer to reduce the gain so that I can use the
transmitted signal in place of the CW sidetone. Just shorting the RX
antenna input leaves far too much signal into the speaker or cans - but
yes - the receiver can 'take it'. I have some completely solid state
receivers and they can "take it" too. It's not pleasant to listen.
Adding some transistors and glue inside the radios is the most easily
reversible modification (just yank it out). The radio immediately
reverts back to original.
