[ARC5] muting

Hi Ray –
No schematics here at the office so I’m going from memory, always a
dangerous thing for me to do.
The Receiver rack contains relays that short the audio line when you
transmit. If you don’t have the rack you can do this with an external
relay. However, shorting the line means you have no side tone for spotting
and monitoring of you on-the-air signal.
I do not short the audio during transmit. I find that just turning down
the receiver sensitivity control to almost minimum gives me audio at a
reduced level for both of these purposes. This means you have an extra
step when switching between transmit and receive, but for typical vintage
type QSOs this doesn’t matter as the guy on the other end also needs a
small time delay to do the same thing.
