Well, if you put $39 in 1947 into an inflation calculator, it comes out to
about $410 today. OTOH, $35 would buy you an ounce of gold in 1947, which
is worth perhaps $1200 to $1400 today...  IMO a more realistic measure of
inflation.

Not so very different in REAL money.

BTW, it's an object lesson in runaway government, which only benefits from
inflation. They pay debts in devalued money and charge Capital Gains taxes
on the FICTIONAL 'increased value' of anything you sell that kept its
value.
