[ARC5] Non Directional Beacons

Yes, most NDBs were AM MCW. But, a few broadcast two frequencies; one was the CW carrier and the second just keyed CW of the Morse ID, 1020 kHz higher than the carrier. Your receiver wouldn't know the difference. Quite a few NDBs broadcast transcribed weather reports, at 15 minutes past the hour, especially around major cities. LAX was one example.

Using ADF on a 4-course radio range station is cheating. Ya gotta just listen with your BC-1206, BC-453, R-23/ARC-4, etc. and put them As and Ns together to get "on the beam". If you got lost, you did a "fade-90" manuever to find your way back to the station, and that can only be done with MVC, not AVC.

All of the NDBs I have listened to have been AM modulated, with the Morse code station ID being MCW. A few - a very few - have had weather reports being broadcast as well. There was one station we could pick up in SC that had that, but that's the only one I can recall hearing.

The note I referenced in the B-24 training manual I believe was referring to Adcock Ranges. I think they were saying that if you tuned in an Adcock Range with an ADF to not pay any attention to the A's and N's and the volume level since the AGC could distort things.

Many ADF's come with BFO's. I understand that feature is included because there are foreign NDBs that just use CW signals without modulation.
