All of the NDBs I have listened to have been AM modulated, with the Morse code station ID being MCW.   A few - a very few - have had weather reports being broadcast as well.  There was one station we could pick up in SC that had that, but that's the only one I can recall hearing.

The note I referenced in the B-24 training manual I believe was referring to Adcock Ranges. I think they were saying that if you tuned in an Adcock Range with an ADF to not pay any attention to the A's and N's and the volume level since the AGC could distort things.

Many ADF's come with BFO's.  I understand that feature is included because there are foreign NDBs that just use CW signals without modulation.
