I do not know what beacon homing equipment they had, but later on (1960’s) we had a needle that would point toward the station.  It would swing around and point back behind us as we flew over the beacon.

I wonder if the folks then had the A-N range system, where to/from confusion was perhaps more likely or even certain.   I never flew an A-N range system.
