(in 'AU' speak). I attend a petrol station where I fill my vehicle
  with petrol from a bowser.
  (That's proper usage)

(in 'US' speak). I go to the gas station where I pump gas for my
  auto.
(That's Hollywood usage, and plain wrong.) ;-)

In Holland (and south Africa, they don't have petrol (or gas) - they
    have 'benzine'.

(I love the vagaries of language.)

Now - to explain "Jerry Can".
When the Brits (and Aussies) arrived in North Africa they discovered
the nasty kerosene cans they used to cart petrol in were far inferior
  to the German "Jerry Can".
It seems we adopted both the design and the name.
