Hi Mike - Yep, possibly an obsolete term by the 1970's? They are actually
pretty useful - essentially failure proof when the "plant" goes down or
lots of damage.. We had them plus sound-powered phones, but from the open
bridge to an armored helm they worked well.
BTW, that photo of the sailor aboard the LCU in the Wiki article is off Red
Beach, Camp Pendelton CA. Another Fine Navy Day......
