I'd use the 1/4 inch tubing and insert the next smaller diameter tubing into the 1/4 inch to strengthen it.

Michaels most probably has it.  Hobby Lobby most probably has it.  And be sure to check at Ace hardware stores.  It is by K&S Engineering, Chicago, Ill. 

Only bad thing about that K&S tubing is that it is very thin and thus not very strong. That is Okay if you want to slide two together and solder it to make something but it will only take so much stress and that ain't much.
