OK, but where does one find 1/4 brass tubing? What is it used for commercially? Old style brass toilet feeder tubes are 3/8" . I looked at the local hardware store and also Home Depot, but no luck. Would it be found in an auto parts store?

That was I. What it requires is 1/4" BRASS tubing, not copper.

Cut a chunk off about 7/8" long. Then using a Dremel tool with one of those
really skinny cutoff wheels in it, or a very fine bladed hack-saw, cut two slots,
about 1/4" long, centered and opposite one another in one end of the brass

tubing.

Attach a GOOD knob (one with a brass insert and at least one good
set-screw (grub-screw, to our UK friends)) to the un-slotted end, then placing
the slotted end carefully over the spline, tap it over the spline fairly
vigorously, but not hard enough to mark the knob.

The brass is springy, and will expand a slight bit. It will be very tight on the
spline. You may have to "center it up" a bit.

There will be zero backlash with this.

If you're really anal about it, you could fill the slotted end with some
superglue before tapping it onto the spline...but you'd better be quick.

I have not found it necessary to glue or solder the brass onto the spline. It is
somewhat difficult to remove without bending it.
