That is very cool and unique! I came across something like that at an antique radio swap meet many years ago, but was an older design army radio that used a "catwisker" detector in a glass tube encased with brass. I think the transmitter was a spark gap type. the thing was a work of art!  It looked new, but the owner claimed that it was NOS...for $300!!!! I didn't know anything about it, so I passed. I still think about that radio to this day...

I am amazed that there was a phone modulated field radio in 1918! WHO KNEW?
Not only that, but "air variable capacitors" in an era when fixed caps and variometers were the norm.
