That sort of thing only works well when the receiver is set in AGC mode for 
AM. I thoroughly dislike that method of gain control. Many military receivers, 
like the BC-348, RCH, etc., used that method and it is a terrible method in 
my opinion. Separate RF and AF gain controls give much more freedom to 
adjust things the way you want them.

I mount 'em on the front "panel". There is JUST enough room.
