The RA-1* is *not* and never was a military radio.  It was a 
_commercial_ model that was certainly beloved by the Navy for its ash 
and trash haulers, but also by airlines and other clients, including the 
British.

Surely?  It seems to me that's an undocumented presumption, given Mike 
Everette's research.  I'm not sure there's anything certain about any of 
this.  But whatever floats your boat...
