Just for information re: the "borrowed" SCR-183 theory-

The only SCR-183 set produced by Western Electric
before Earhert vanished was the enigmatic SCR-AF-183,
produced on contract 10999-NY-36.
By 1936, the design of the SCR-183 had undergone
many improvements. But for some inexplicable reason,
SCR-AF-183 was built as a copy of the earlier 1932
SCR-AB-183 and 1st-run Navy "GF" sets.
These 1.5 Watt-out radios were a sort-of "first try"
at a military Command Set by A.R.C. and
were not up to any mission more extreme
than a check-ride around the training field
(or export to third-world countries??).

Western Electric did not produce another SCR-183/-283
until SCR-AN-183 on contract 1246-NY-41,
long after Earhert had (insert your favorite theory here).
She had her pick of excellent aircraft radios.
SCR-AF-183 would have been a very bad-
even suicidal choice, so it is unlikely she used one.
