A friend of mine told me that he bought a Wildcat after WWII. Based on his description it must have been a Eastern Aircraft version, the FM-2, with an R-1820 rather than the F4F or FM-1 with the R-1830 engine.

It must have had an RU/GF installation. He said it had a radio in which you had to swap out the coils. It likely was an airplane retained for training in the US during the war and it seems to have been common for the RF/GU and SCR-183/283 to be used in those types and even in experimental aircraft. I guess their radio needs were modest and the later sets were reserved for combat aircraft.

I always meant to ask him if he had to swap out the coil sets in flight but he passed away a little while back.
