If I may, and speaking as an old "loggie" as logistic types were
sometimes known, I would like to add a few corrections and one addition
to the list Robert provided.
Sacremento, McClellan AFB was never known as SC-ALC or SCAMA. The
correct acronym was SM-ALC or SMAMA.
Ogden, Hill AFB was never known as OG-ALC or OGAMA. The correct acronym
was OO-ALC or OOAMA.
Rome (NY), Griffiss AFB, was known as ROAMA, not RAMA. It survived as a
depot until the very early 70s. Its primary function was ground
electronics - radio, radar, nav aids, etc. It then served as a SAC base
and AFCS/AFCC sub-command hq until it closed completely. I retired from
there in 1988.
The addition would be Mobile (AL), Brookley AFB, MOAMA. It was phased
out beginning in 1964 and finally closed completely in 1968. I was hired
there as a radio-radar tech in 1951.
There are now only three "heavy duty" - aircraft maint and modification
- depots left: Robins AFB, Tinker AFB, and Hill AFB.
Just to set the record a bit straight...
