Hi Neil,

I took from the first description that both the rf and the if strips are 
tuned and that the if tuning tracks with the rf tuning from *one* knob. 
Beyond that difference between your 'understanding' and my 
'understanding' of the first description I suspect you are on the right 
track (pun intended) that changing those caps has upset the tracking 
between the two (three?) sections. That would cut sidebands and reduce 
output akin to some of the "bandpass shift" schemes but unintended and 
uncontrolled. Just my wild guess from my own lack of information.
