Dave,
It sounds like the "why" is what you just said : "without having to fiddle with tracking a LO at the mixer". The "how" is interesting. Been a looong time since I had ARC-2's.Forgot how technically interesting they are. Have you figured out the trick to get the dynamotor back in the chassis? Took me a bit of frustration until I found that you sort of had to roll it into place.

I have no idea... The manual tells how it works,
but nothing on "why." The scheme does keep
the transmitter and receiver locked to the same freq
without having to fiddle with tracking a
"Local Oscillator" at the mixer.
The same PTO and multiplier stages run both.
Kinda reminds me of a Direct Conversion set... sorta.

Nope. After alignment, it looks like the same
"side of a barn" curve from one end to the other.
