And then there are things like the PSM-45, which is not only a military designation given to a commercial Simpson Model 467 digital multimeter, but is a designation that may apply to other commercial digital multimeters that are not the 467 or even not mede by Simpson.

I will admit to being a bit puzzled by the logic used in some test equipment designations.  For example, some test equipment may have a designation indicating aircraft use, even though it is not meant to be used on board an aircraft in flight but is just used for the maintenance of aircraft equipment.
