I've found the thin/thick film power resistors to be very intolerant of momentary overloads, even extremely brief overloads
Take this into consideration when selecting the power resistor
And of course you need to provide adequate heat sinking
If you do the above they should work fine

Isn't there a mod to these rigs to lower the grid drive to the final
to lower the power output? why use a pad?
